Captioning at UArizona

Captioning benefits many users because it makes content searchable and can support learning for non-Native English speakers, visual learners, and users in noisy environments. UArizona has developed guidance and resources for media in addition to a Captioning Decision Guide.

Audio/video accessibility

  • Follow the established Standards and Guidelines for UArizona content. Don't forget, public videos posted by UArizona must be captioned.
  • Departments should purchase only audio/video materials that include captioning.
  • University departments that create audio/video content must include plans for captioning as a part of the original production.
    • Tip: Using a script and contracting with a vendor makes the captioning process easier and less expensive.

Automatic, machine-generated captions

Auto-generated captions are beneficial for many users but are not accurate enough to be ADA-compliant. In order to provide full access, auto-captions must be verified for accuracy for an accommodation request or for publicly posted media.

  • To verify accuracy of captions on your videos, enable captioning and watch the words that are displayed as your video plays.
  • If there are mistakes, correct the captions or request captioning from one of the UArizona captioning vendors.
  • If you are using auto-generated captions for live stream events, alert your audience that the information may contain errors.
